David J. Joseph talks to WIB!

Women in a Unique Industry

Right off the bat, Women in Business had the pleasure of meeting with representatives from David J. Joseph. David J. Joseph, more commonly known as DJJ, is a world leader in scrap-metal brokerage. The lunch was casual, and the representatives were very enthusiastic about their experiences at DJJ. They kept emphasizing that although being a manager at a scrap-metal facility does not sound like the most glamorous job, it has opened their eyes to all the fields that women could make an impact and thrive. They mentioned that they never in a million years thought they would end up in this position, but it really is a job they can see themselves staying with in the long-run. In fact, a speaker quoted, "I never thought I would trade in high-heels and business skirts for steel toed worker boots."

By the way a large percent of their employees feel individualized attention and care within the company, nearly all stay with the company over 10 years. The speakers reiterated again and again that what made DJJ special is their ability to see a potential employee, and find their strengths to put them in the best position that they enjoy in the company. They strive to make sure everyone is satisfied with their position, and if someone is motivated or ready for a change, they will find another position in the company for that person within the next few months. All of the representatives seem to love their jobs, and because the field goes unnoticed at times, their ability to run their own yards and attain leadership positions is incredible.

Current Women in Business freshman Maddie Blechschmidt quotes, "It was interesting to see a 'unique' business and also encouraging to see how passionate these women are about their jobs." We want to thank David J. Joseph for driving all the way from Cincinnati this morning to see us!

Hello new WIBlets!

Welcome New Members!

As a new member myself, I can honestly say that Women in Business did a wonderful job making every girl feel happy and welcome in WIB. Through various e-mails drumming up excitement, our New Member Retreat was finally here! Returning members in WIB worked countless hours planning this fun event that everyone enjoyed.

Networking is one of the most important components that is focused in WIB, and this new member event allowed every girl to first feel that aspect come to life. From networking within WIB to outside employers and contacts, it is important for all girls to continually develop those social networking skills that are crucial in the business world.

From the colorful balloons, to the colorful streamers and the surplus of candy, it was clear that each and every girl was excited for the incoming WIB members. Of course, it also felt nice celebrating our achievements making it through the competitive interview process! As every new member walked in, we were surprised with a jar of candy on our chair with a colored balloon tied to it. Little did we know, each balloon corresponded with the team we were on! After introductions, we all broke off into groups at tables to discuss certain aspects of WIB. Some tables included fun games, and other tables included explaining goals and expectations of the club for this year. New WIB member Blair Carlisle quotes, "It was already such an incredible experience getting to know my fellow new WIB members. Every girl was so welcoming, and were ALL enthusiastic to watch me grow through this journey."

Overall, every girl had such a fun experience, and it only strengthened our love for Women in Business at IU. We finally feel like we belong!

CH Robinson!

CH Robinson presented Women in Business with a fresh perspective on the supply chain industry at their event on September 13th. CH Robinson is a “business to business” third-party logistics company with the largest network of motor carrier capacity in North America. Michael Atkinson, Kate Pederson, and Dannit Schneider represented CH Robinson at the event.

The presentation they gave was lively and interactive; Michael, Kate, and Dannit spoke enthusiastically about the CH Robinson internship experience. In fact, they said that the jobs performed in their internship program mirror the work that entry-level sales representatives are given. They also emphasized the benefits of Robinson, including internal promotion, opportunities for continuous training and professional development, and incredibly high employee retention rates. Whether or not we in the audience were thinking about careers in supply chain management before, we are definitely thinking about them now.
Women in Business had a great event with CH Robinson!

The greatest universal takeaway from the presentation was the interviewing tips; as recruiters themselves, Michael and Kate disclosed what they really like and really don’t like in an interview.  “CH Robinson shared a lot of useful advice about interviews, especially their advice on second round,” said sophomore Nisha Boyington, “I will definitely be looking back at what they said before every interview I have.” And whether it is for CH Robinson or any other company, their universal tips are sure to make a positive impact.

We want to thank Michael, Kate, and Dannit for speaking with us and we in WIB hope to see them and CH Robinson again soon!
